Democratic Party blog "Republican Congresswoman Jean Schmidt (OH-02) basically just called Congressman Murtha, a decorated Vietnam veteran and former Marine Corps drill instructor, a coward." DCCC Blog "In an unusual floor action, Representative Jean Schmidt today was forced to withdraw remarks she made referring to Congressman John Murtha, a highly decorated Vietnam War Veteran, as a 'coward.' " Bareknucklepolitics "Rep. Jean Schmidt (R) called Rep. Murtha (D) a coward..." Ed Henry of CNN "And, at one point, a Republican, Jean Schmidt of Ohio, basically suggested John Murtha, a wounded veteran of the Vietnam War, somebody who got two Purple Hearts, was a coward. " Washington Post "Differences over policy on the Iraq war ignited an explosion of angry words and personal insults on the House floor Friday, when the chamber's newest member [Schmidt] suggested that a decorated war veteran, Rep. John Murtha, D Pa., was a coward for calling for an immediate withdrawal."
On and on and on....
Actually, Jean Schmidt herself did not call him a coward. She quoted someone else:
Though for the record: I agree completely with the statement. However valiant and brave Murtha was in Vietnam, his Iraq assessment and his current beliefs are beyond cowardly: they are traitorous. Correction: A comment from a fellow blogger this morning pointed out that, according to a report from this morning's Cincinnati Enquirer, the Marine who Schmidt claimed to be quoting denies having told Jean to give her now-infamous "cowards" comment. This does not, however, take away from the point that, when the reports that I quoted attributed the quote to Schmidt that, at that time, it was believed that Schmidt was quoting a Marine. Now it is fair to attribute them to her. I still support the comments, even though she doesn't even support them. We should be allowed to call someone who supports the immediate withdrawal from a nation simply for political gain a "coward." I have no problem with it. In fact, just for you, Spanner, check this out: Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! Jack Murtha is a coward! But again, Spanner, thanks for pointing that out. You provide an invaluable service. |
| NeoConCentral November 22, 2005 11:50 AM PST Well as to the first thing-- I'm glad you pointed that out, I will put that at the bottom of this post for people to see. Of course, there was no way of me knowing that she was accused of making that up since that report was only released today. I posted this before that news came out. But thanks for pointing that out, really. Not that it causes me to withdraw support from the comments she made-- it's perfectly reasonable to call someone who believes in cutting-and-running from a war to leave a nation to be taken over by a terrorist (Zarqawi). And his idea it traitorous. It is traitorous to the Iraqi people who we are assisting in building a new government. If we leave now, their government will collapse. It is starting a job, promising to finish it, and then cutting-and-running. That is cowardly and backstabbing. Therefore the term traitorous applies. Do you really believe we should withdraw right now? Do you want to see the nation of Iraq taken over by Al-Qaeda? Just what we need: An entire nation in the control of Osama bin Laden's network. I agree that there are some problems with how we are running this war, mostly due to a press corps that feeds on the mistakes of the American troops, which in turn creates anti-Americanism, and also due to Rumsfelds "PC war," with insane rules of engagement. How can you expect to win a war when a man who shoots and kills someone who drives by a mandatory checkstop, much in the way that suicide bombers do, is put through legal trouble? How can you win a war when you can't shoot until you're shot? How can you kill the enemy when you cannot kill until you are killed? These are valid questions and areas that need to be adressed. But even with this, immediate withdrawal is the WORST possible idea. Al-Qaeda would have Iraq almost as fast as the Democrats would start finding ways to blame it all on Republicans. We must stay the course. | ||
| Spanner November 22, 2005 10:38 AM PST And Murtha comments are NOT traitorus. Lord I love Neo-Conmen who swearthey know what patriotism is. Bush and Cheney called him a hero. Your either clueless or a dick. | ||
| Spanner November 22, 2005 10:37 AM PST Actually con-man she a liar From Col. Bubp himself: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051122/NEWS01/511220352 There was no discussion of him personally being a coward or about any person being a coward," Bubp said. "My message to the folks in Washington, D.C., and to all the Congress people up there, is to stay the course. We cannot leave Iraq or cut and run - any terminology that you want to use." Not only did she hide behind a REMF she also lied aboutthe REMF actually said..Since Bubp disputes what she said the only conclusion thats left is she called Murtha a coward and used soemone else for cover..Gutless | ||
| NeoConCentral November 20, 2005 02:03 PM PST "Actually shs did call him a coward. She just hid behind a REMF Marine. " OHHHHHH NO! You've certainly exposed me Spanner! I purposely and knowingly tried to deceive my readers. Thats why I failed to note in my post that "She quoted someone else: At one point in the emotional debate, Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, told of a phone call she received from a Marine colonel." Wait, that's right: I did say that! Please obtain a basic understanding of how to read before commenting on anything ever again. | ||
| Spanner November 20, 2005 01:45 PM PST Actually shs did call him a coward. She just hid behind a REMF Marine. Who didnt have the balls to say it to Murtha's face. It was a gutless move that she had to apologize for and take back..or Flip flop as you Neo-Conmen would say | ||
